Description
The Kenya Wildlife Services has blamed livestock grazers in ranches bordering the Tsavo National Park for poaching. KWS assistant director in-charge of the Tsavo ecosystem, Wilson Korir, said some of the herders collude with the poachers to kill elephants in the ranches.
In the last two weeks, 15 elephants were killed in the ranches at Galana in Tsavo East and Taita ranches in Tsavo West. Sources said eight elephants were killed at Bungule village and the area between Rukinga and Taita ranches while another seven elephants were poached near Tsavo East last week at Maili Saba just outside the Galana Conservancy on October 11.
Korir said that most poachers hide at the manyattas where they disguise as herders before committing the crime. He said there was need for the ranches to work closely with the wildlife conservation to curb the escalating poaching incidents. Most poaching incidents happen when it has rained.
