Description
The Star 13th Sept 2012:An inured two-year-old male baby elephant was rescued by the Mount Kenya Trust team at the weekend. The calf was found alone in the forest with a deep cut between his shoulder blades. It is believed a machete was used to cut it. The Mount Kenya Trust team and the Kenya Wildlife Services helped to airlift the baby elephant from the Nanyuki airstrip.
The calf was brought to the David Sheldrick elephant orphanage in Nairobi. The calf joins another rescued baby elephant at the same weekend from Tsavo West. The six-month-old calf was found in the Lake Jipe area severely dehydrated. Both calves are being cared for at the elephant orphanage and will be released when they are old enough to join wild herds.
The David Sheldrick Wildlife Trust was founded in 1977 and has since been rescuing and rehabilitating orphaned elephants back into the wild successfully. Elephant orphan rescues continue as poaching remains rampant in the country, leaving many of the animals motherless.
